DIY: Calculate BMI and LBW

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Indicates the propensity, or lack thereof, for a person to develop disease.

To calculate BMI divide body weight in pounds by height in inches squared, then multiply by 703.

• Healthy Weight: 18.5 – 24.9

• Overweight: 25 – 29.9

• Obese: 30+

• An exception that does not fit into the BMI model would be very lean, healthy individuals. (i.e. Body builder).

Lean Body Weight (LBW)

The total of all cell mass, water mass, bone mass and toxins. The difference between total body weight and LBW is Body Fat.

There are three “Total Weight” shifts that can occur:

a. Gain – this can be a gain in call volume, water retention, or cellular repair.

b. Loss – can be a result of:

i. Water retention loss

ii. Detoxification

iii. Muscle Loss / Calorie Restriction

iv. Fat loss exceeding LBW gain

c. No Change/Same – no weight change does not mean that LBW isn’t increasing.
